A brief history lesson:

Guttersmiths was founded in Madison, WI by John Briggs in 2007. After graduating college in NY with a BA in History in 2005, John worked for a couple years at an historic restoration company owned by a lifelong friend in their hometown of Baltimore, MD. There he learned the basic principles of half round gutter installation, architectural copper work, and restoration carpentry. Following his move to Wisconsin in 2007 to care for an elderly parent, John continued to do the same type of restoration work under the company name Guttersmiths.

Pro-tip: Paint doesn’t adhere well to powder coating without thorough and time-consuming surface preparation. Be aware of this when working with some of the more popular half round gutter brackets.

Half Round Gutters

Guttersmiths has now been specializing in the installation of half round gutters for over 15 years, and is Wisconsin’s only installation contractor that can offer on-site manufacturing of seamless half round gutters. Colors Options for Half Round Gutters

We have access to gutter coil and downspouts in approximately 50 colors. About 15 colors are available with a baked enamel factory finish and another 35 colors are available in Kynar/Hylar finishes (this a different color finish process commonly used in commercial sheet metal and residential metal roofing applications). Lead times for products with Kynar/Hylar coatings are usually a minimum of 8 – 10 weeks from when the order is processed, while baked enamel finishes are usually available sooner. Click here to see color charts.

Although gutter coil and downspouts are available to us in many different colors, traditional fascia-mount external gutter hangers and downspout brackets, along with some other parts and accessories, have very limited factory direct color options – those colors are High Gloss White, Royal Brown, and Dark Bronze. If you need a color other than those three, a quick fix is to spray paint the parts to match – which consistently leads to fading and adhesion issues down-the-road.

Our custom color solution at Guttersmiths is to contract with our long time commercial coatings partner to apply a factory finish to our half round gutter hangers and downspout brackets.

The finish adheres well, and the color remains vibrant for years.

Half Round Gutter Colors – Group 1

Colors in this group are usually more readily available than the colors in Group 2, with shorter lead times – unless the product is on backorder. Half round gutter coil and round downspouts are stocked in these colors.

Additional Details

Standard 6” half round gutters available in seamless lengths; 4”, 5”, and 8” sizes also available

  • 6 inch half round gutters is the most common size for residential applications, and has become the standard since the 6 inch half round gutter machines became commercially available to installers and supply houses; 4 inch might be a good fit for a very small entryway overhang, and 8 inch can be found on homes and structures with larger roof areas and/or where there’s a large concentration of water

Corrugated round downspouts and smooth round downspouts installed in 2”, 3”, 4”, 5”, 6”

  • 4 inch round downspouts are by far the most commonly used size in the Midwest, and this may vary by region
  • 6 inch half round gutter paired with 4 inch round downspouts is the most common configuration for residential applications in this area
  • 2 inch round downspouts are paired with 4 inch half round gutter, and 3 inch round downspouts are usually paired with 5 inch half round gutter; none of these sizing combinations are set in stone, but that’s how they’re commonly configured and they look nice and function well together

Copper, Aluminum, and Galvalume products installed on a regular basis

  • See photos below for examples of half round gutters in the different material types

Decorative downspout brackets and leader heads installed regularly, with the ability to create reproductions of existing sheet metal details depending on project requirements

Typically installed with external fascia-mount brackets that support the gutter from below; roof strap hangers and hidden hangers are also utilized as needed

  • Guttersmiths uses half round fascia mount brackets (or half round hangers) that match the profiles of gutter brackets found on some of the oldest gutters we’ve replaced
  • The manufacturer that supplies our hangers has been in business for over 150 years, with a proven track record of functionality and longevity
  • While other types of modern fascia hangers are available, such as those made from stamped sheet metal or cast bronze/brass, Guttersmiths prefers the distinguished and recognizable historic aesthetic achieved by the hangers we use
  • Although we prefer to work with a certain type of half round hanger, we do make exceptions once in a while – if you have a specific request, let us know

Costs can vary quite a bit depending on the scope your project. Material type, accessibility, project location, color, fascia detail, and type of hanger all have an impact on pricing. Please contact us for half round gutter quotes.
